While a lot of different clothing stores sell a variety of brands, there are different groups of people who like their clothes that are designed outside the mainstream influences wear. This type of style generally falls under the category of "Indie", and these consumers generally shop at an indie clothing stores. Indie is actually a short form of the word "independent" as the kinds of designers who produce and sell this type of clothing is usually the artist and musician types who want closer to their own beliefs and styles associated with especially among the musician scene, indie clothing is very popular and there is a large market for it.
The indie movement was first established with the music scene of the mid to late 1960's. The Velvet Underground is generally considered the first band to venture away from the mainstream scene and actually became a hit sensation. Taking creative control over all processes is generally a reason why a clothing store or indie band would branch out on their own. In a very real sense it is an artistic pursuit of what they want to do. No one can be creative and to bring forth new ideas as someone constantly breathing down their necks, telling them to change and to change that, it defeats the object of creativeness and can frustrate some great ideas. Everyone from George Lucas to the White Stripes has sought to keep their dreams in their own powers. Similarly, artists who are creating clothes and wants ultimate control over their indie clothing are pursuing a traditional form of self expression which consumers can share with in indie clothing stores.
